Computer error caused inaccurate renewal notices
Customers have not been charged additional fees.

Letter from MVD Director Alicia Ortiz

Dear MVD Customer,

Due to a system error, the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) recently sent you a vehicle registration renewal notice for the vehicle bearing the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) @VIN and license plate @PLATE that included incorrect registration renewal amounts due. I apologize for any confusion, frustration and inconvenience this may have caused.

Please know that motor vehicle registration fees have not changed, and the system will assess the correct fees. You should expect to pay the same fee as you paid last year.

Your Options: What You Can Do

  • Renew your registration online or in person and the correct fee will be assessed at time of transaction.
  • Renew your registration by mail. You can verify the correct registration renewal amount by:
    • Going online at and clicking on the “vehicles” link; or
    • Checking last year’s fees.

What Is MVD Doing to Ensure You Don’t Get Overcharged?

MVD is:

  • Ensuring that fees assessed at time of transaction online or in person will be the correct fees.
  • Tracking mail-in renewals and flagging any that appear to be for the incorrect amount.
  • Contacting those customers who submitted incorrect fees to:
    • Help complete their renewal transaction;
    • Avoid any late penalties;
    • Prevent any lapses in vehicle registration; and
  • Automatically refunding any payment that exceeds the correct amount due.

Thank you for your patience as we navigate the customer service challenges caused by this error.
